London 1948
The Second World War broke the Olympic cycle for 12 years. The Games resumed in 1948 with London hosting for the second time (July 29-August 14). 59 nations participated with 4,099 athletes (385 women). The post war years did not allow for the construction of Olympic village. Amazing were the results of Dutch sprinter Fanny Blankers-Koen and Czech Emil Zatopek as well as Hungarian boxer Laszlo Papp.
USA took 84 (38 gold) medals.
