Anvers 1920
The First World War upset the Olympic cycle. Still in 1914 IOC members approved new symbols - the flag with five interlaced color rings and the Olympic oath.
2,669 athletes (78 women) from 29 nations arrived in Antwerp (April 20-September 12). Banned from participation were the countries that caused the war - Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey as well as the Soviet Russia because of its rising communism. Most medals went to the United States - 96 (41 gold).
